Ondo Health Tech Students Protest Alleged Extortion, Poor Facilities in Akure

Hundreds of students of the Ondo State College of Health Technology, Akure, on Monday staged a protest over alleged extortion and deteriorating infrastructure within the institution.

The students, who gathered in large numbers at the school’s main entrance, barricaded the gate, set tyres ablaze and chanted solidarity songs, vowing to boycott lectures and examinations until their demands are addressed.

Placards bearing inscriptions such as “Stop Extortion Now,” “Health Tech With Poor Environment,” “We Are Tired of This Wickedness,” and “No Solution, No Exams” were displayed by the protesters.

According to accounts obtained by The Nigeria Education News, the students accused the management of collecting various fees while failing to provide basic facilities, including functional classrooms, hostels, laboratories and reliable water supply.

Students Voice Frustration

Speaking anonymously, a student said the learning environment had become unbearable.

“We cannot continue like this. The environment is not fit for learning. Until they fix these problems, there will be no exams and no lectures,” the student said.

Another student, Oluwasegun Adeyemi, said repeated appeals to the management had produced no results.

“We have written and complained several times, but nothing has changed. That is why we decided to protest,” he said.

Other students who spoke by phone echoed similar frustrations. A final-year student, Chimezie Okoro, described the situation as discouraging.

“It’s really frustrating. We have complained for months, yet nothing is being done,” he said.

Nneoma Eze added, “We just want a safe and conducive environment to learn. Is that too much to ask?”

Management, Government React

Reacting to the allegations, the Provost of the college, Emoruwa Oluwambe, denied claims of extortion against the management. He, however, confirmed that the Ondo State Government had intervened and convened a meeting, promising that a detailed response would be issued later.

Following the protest, the Ondo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Banji Ajaka, visited the campus and appealed to the students to embrace dialogue rather than violence.

“Students’ welfare and the provision of a conducive learning environment remain a priority for the government,” Ajaka assured.

Academic Activities Disrupted

The protest has disrupted academic activities at the institution, with students insisting that the boycott will continue until concrete steps are taken to address their concerns.

While the state government has promised to investigate the allegations and engage the college management, the outcome of the intervention is still being awaited as tension lingers on campus.
