The Ondo State Government and unions representing academic and non-academic staff in the state-owned universities have reached an agreement to resolve the lingering dispute over the implementation of the Federal Government and university unions’ new wage structure and allowances.

The agreement followed a series of meetings between officials of the state government, led by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, and representatives of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) and Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU).

The discussions focused on outstanding issues involving salary adjustments, allowances and other welfare concerns affecting workers in the state-owned universities. The unions had been on an indefinite strike over unpaid allowances and the implementation of the agreed wage provisions.

A major outcome of the negotiations was the governor’s approval for the full domestication of the Federal Government-ASUU agreement on the Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure (CONUASS) for academic staff in Ondo State-owned universities.

According to the government, implementation of the agreement will take into consideration the peculiarities of the state, while outstanding matters relating to salaries, allowances and staff welfare will also be addressed.

Aiyedatiwa described education as a priority of his administration, stressing that improving workers’ welfare was essential to maintaining academic standards and competitiveness in the state’s universities.

“Our administration will continue to prioritise the welfare of workers, especially in the education sector, because we understand that a motivated workforce is key to academic excellence,” the governor said.

He added that the approval of the FGN-ASUU agreement was intended to enable the state’s universities to compete favourably with their counterparts across the country.

The governor also assured the unions that his administration would continue to engage stakeholders to promote industrial harmony and minimise disruptions to academic activities in the state’s tertiary institutions.

Reacting to the development, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko chapter, commended Aiyedatiwa for approving the agreement.

In a letter signed by its Secretary, Dr Y.K. Kazeem, the union described the governor’s intervention as evidence of his commitment to workers’ welfare and pledged to support academic stability and improved productivity in the state-owned universities.

The resolution comes after ASUU had in July called on the Ondo State Government to implement the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement, including its financial provisions for academic staff.
