The Federal Government has appointed a United States-based physician and academic, Dr Olugbenga A. Awe, as the new Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Ondo State.
The appointment was conveyed in a letter dated July 30, 2026, and signed by the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa.
According to the letter, Awe’s appointment took effect from July 29, 2026.
“I write to convey approval for your appointment as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council, Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State. Your appointment takes effect from 29th July, 2026,” the letter stated.
Awe succeeds Senator Nora Ladi Daduut, who was recently appointed Nigeria’s ambassador to South Korea.
A physician, academic, entrepreneur and education administrator, Awe is a graduate of the University of Lagos, where he obtained his medical degree before undergoing advanced postgraduate training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Internal Medicine.
He currently serves as an Associate Professor of Medicine at Mercer University School of Medicine in the United States.
The Federal Government described Awe as a distinguished professional whose career spans medicine, higher education, entrepreneurship and public service.
His appointment, according to the statement, is expected to bring his international experience and strategic leadership to the governing council of FUTA.
The government expressed optimism that his leadership would contribute to strengthening governance and promoting academic excellence, innovation and institutional transformation at the university.
Awe is also expected to support FUTA’s contribution to national development through improved administration, research and technological advancement.
