Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has urged the leadership of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) to restore its Law programme and pursue comprehensive reforms to enhance academic quality and relevance.

The appeal was made as Obasanjo received the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of NOUN, Prof. Uduma Uduma, along with members of his management team in Abeokuta, Ogun State, according to a statement issued by the university’s Director of Media and Publicity, Ibrahim Sheme.

Obasanjo stressed the need for the institution to prioritise modernisation, expand student enrolment, and integrate emerging technologies — particularly artificial intelligence — into its academic framework as part of a drive to broaden access to quality education. “I urge the university’s leadership to prioritise modernisation and expand access to quality education,” he said.

Highlighting the institution’s academic capacity, the immediate past Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olufemi Peters, noted that NOUN currently boasts over 300,000 registered students, with about 190,000 actively participating in learning activities — a gap he attributed to varying levels of engagement among learners. He also underscored steps already taken to embed artificial intelligence into academic content, which he said had earned recognition from international educational bodies.

In response, Prof. Uduma reaffirmed his commitment to reviving the Law programme — which had earlier been discontinued — and to consolidating ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening the university’s academic offerings and global competitiveness. He also expressed gratitude to Obasanjo for his continued support for NOUN’s growth and development.

The Vice-Chancellor later toured NOUN’s Abeokuta Study Centre with his team, where they were shown around by the Centre Director, Mr. Oyekunle Adegboyega.
