Obafemi Awolowo University has been officially confirmed as the host institution for the 2026 edition of the West African Universities Games (WAUG), marking a major milestone in the university’s sporting and institutional history.

The hosting rights were granted following an assessment visit by officials of the West African University Sports Federation, whose Executive Council toured the university to evaluate its readiness for the prestigious regional sporting event.

During the inspection exercise, members of the delegation examined several key sporting facilities on campus, including stadiums, training venues, and other athlete-support infrastructure. The evaluation focused on determining whether the institution could meet the operational standards required to host a multi-sport competition of WAUG’s scale.

At the conclusion of the visit, the federation and the university formalised the arrangement through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), officially confirming the Ile-Ife-based institution as host of the 2026 tournament.

Speaking after the confirmation, the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Oluropo Akinfala, described the development as a significant opportunity for the university to reinforce its reputation for excellence in both academics and sports. He noted that hosting the tournament would allow the institution to showcase its facilities, organisational capacity, and international outlook.

Officials from the federation commended the university’s existing sporting infrastructure and preparedness but also highlighted areas that require upgrades to align with international standards. In response, the university management assured that necessary improvements would be carried out ahead of the competition.

The announcement has generated excitement among students and staff, as the West African Universities Games is widely regarded as one of the most prominent university sporting events in the region, bringing together student-athletes from universities across West Africa.

Beyond athletic competition, the games are expected to foster cultural exchange, regional collaboration, and stronger institutional ties among participating universities. The tournament is scheduled to take place in September 2026, giving the host institution several months to complete preparations, logistics, and facility upgrades.
