Students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, have lamented persistent transportation challenges on campus, including long queues and delayed movement, which they say have forced many to leave their hostels as early as 6:00 a.m. to avoid being stranded.
The complaints come amid ongoing adjustments to the university’s transport system following the introduction of compressed natural gas (CNG) buses and tricycles aimed at improving intra-campus mobility.
According to students, the new system has created fresh difficulties, particularly during peak hours, when hundreds are left waiting for limited available vehicles. Many said they now wake up extremely early to secure transportation to lecture venues.
Some students described the situation as exhausting, noting that the long waiting time at bus stops has disrupted their academic schedules and daily routines.
The current transport arrangement follows the deployment of 80 CNG-powered vehicles donated to the institution to enhance campus mobility. However, students say the implementation has not matched demand, leading to overcrowding and delays.
Reports indicate that restrictions limiting movement within campus to only the newly introduced transport system have further worsened congestion at designated bus stops.
Student leaders had previously raised concerns about the system, describing it as inadequate for the population of the university, which runs into tens of thousands.
Despite earlier protests and a temporary lecture boycott by the Students’ Union, the transport challenges appear to persist, with students calling for urgent review and expansion of available vehicles to ease daily movement.
Many affected students are now appealing to the university management to introduce additional buses or restore flexibility in the transport system to reduce pressure on commuters.
The situation continues to generate frustration within the campus community, as academic activities are increasingly impacted by delays in student movement across the university.
