ILE-IFE, OSUN STATE — Professor Gbemi Adeoti of the Department of English, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), has been named joint winner of the 2025 Poetry Prize of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) for his acclaimed poetry collection, “Stoning the Wind.”
The announcement was shared by the university via its official Facebook page, describing the recognition as “a proud moment for Great Ife and a testament to the intellectual and creative strength of the Department of English.”
“This prestigious award celebrates the exceptional literary talent of our professor from the Department of English. This achievement brings great pride to OAU,” the statement read.
Professor Adeoti received the award during the 44th ANA International Convention, where he was presented with a plaque and a certificate of recognition in honour of his contribution to Nigerian poetry.
The ANA Poetry Prize, one of Nigeria’s most respected literary honours, celebrates works that not only demonstrate artistic excellence but also engage meaningfully with the nation’s social and political realities.
A celebrated poet, playwright, and literary scholar, Adeoti has earned a reputation for his evocative writing and academic brilliance. His debut collection, “Naked Soles,” first brought him national attention for its deep reflection on the everyday struggles and resilience of Nigerians.
Beyond poetry, Professor Adeoti has distinguished himself as a leading scholar in African literature and performance studies. He has served as Director of the Institute of Cultural Studies at OAU and has published widely on African writers such as Wole Soyinka and Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o.
His latest work, “Stoning the Wind,” has been praised for its lyrical depth, cultural insight, and unflinching portrayal of Nigeria’s socio-political landscape.
The literary community has hailed Adeoti’s win as further proof of his standing among Nigeria’s finest voices in contemporary poetry.
