The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has announced Wednesday, January 14, and Thursday, January 15, 2026, as lecture-free days for all newly admitted students. The decision followed a management meeting held on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, and is aimed at allowing fresh students finalize documentation and fully participate in this year’s matriculation ceremony.
In an official statement, the university explained that the break will enable new students to complete their verification, clearance, and faculty registration processes, while also preparing adequately for the matriculation ceremony scheduled for Thursday, January 15, 2026.
The institution further advised all fresh students to ensure that all required fees are duly paid prior to matriculation, warning that those who fail to fulfill payment obligations may be barred from participating in the ceremony.
Many students have expressed relief over the announcement. A Dramatic Arts student described the decision as timely, saying it “will give us enough time to get everything done.” Similarly, Boluwatife, a student from Political Science, appreciated the management’s consideration, noting that the break “brings great relief” amid the pressure of registration and lectures.
The lecture-free days are expected to ease the clearance process and ensure seamless participation in the matriculation ceremony. The university assured that necessary arrangements have been put in place to support students throughout the exercise.
Management also emphasized the importance of the matriculation ceremony as a major milestone in the academic journey of every student and encouraged full participation.
Meanwhile, OAU has also released the academic calendar for the 2025/2026 session, highlighting key academic activities including lecture periods, examinations, and official breaks.
