OAU Community Mourns Sudden Death of Third-Year Medical Student

The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has been thrown into deep mourning following the sudden death of an 18-year-old Part Three medical student, Timilehin Toromade.

 

The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has been thrown into deep mourning following the sudden death of an 18-year-old Part Three medical student, Timilehin Toromade.

The university confirmed the tragic incident in a statement issued on Tuesday by its Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olanrewaju. According to the release, Toromade was believed to have passed away in his sleep in the early hours of Tuesday.

Providing further insight, the university disclosed that the student, with matriculation number CLI/2022/133, was last noted to be alive shortly after 2 a.m., when one of his roommates briefly opened the door to admit another medical student residing in the same building. He was later discovered unresponsive.

“The Management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has received with profound shock, deep sorrow, and a heavy heart the devastating news of the sudden passing of an eighteen-year-old Part Three student of the College of Health Sciences, Department of Medicine and Surgery—who reportedly died in his sleep in the early hours of today, Tuesday, 6th January, 2026,” the statement read in part.

In a condolence message, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Simeon Bamire, expressed heartfelt sympathy to the late student’s family, colleagues, friends, and the entire university community. He described the incident as “deeply painful and distressing,” noting that the university has lost a promising young mind who had dedicated himself to a future of service and healing.

“The entire University community is united in grief over the untimely departure of a student who had embraced the rigours of medical training with the hope of one day healing others and serving humanity,” he said. “The loss of a young life filled with promise, purpose, and potential is a tragedy that words alone cannot adequately capture.”

The university management assured that it is working closely with relevant authorities to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding the incident, in accordance with medical and institutional procedures. It also revealed that psychological and emotional support measures are being put in place for affected students and staff.

“At this moment of collective mourning, we call on students, staff, alumni, and friends of the institution to remain calm, compassionate, and prayerful, while upholding the values of empathy and solidarity for which Great Ife is renowned,” the statement added.
