The Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Professor A. S. Bamire, has praised veteran journalist and media entrepreneur Dele Momodu for his enduring contributions to journalism and national development, describing him as one of Nigeria’s most influential voices in public discourse.
Momodu received the Distinguished Ambassador of the Library Excellence Award during the university’s 2026 Library Week celebration organised by the Hezekiah Oluwasanmi Library. The ceremony, held at Oduduwa Hall on the university campus, brought together academics, media professionals, and students to honour his decades-long impact on journalism and scholarship.
Speaking at the event, Professor Bamire said the recognition was a tribute to Momodu’s remarkable career and his commitment to promoting Nigeria’s image globally through media and intellectual engagement. According to him, the Ovation International publisher embodies the ideals of courage, intellect, and consistency that define exemplary journalism.
“Chief Dele Momodu represents the very best of Nigerian journalism,” the Vice-Chancellor said, noting that his contributions to democratic discourse and mentorship of younger journalists have had a lasting impact on the profession.
Tributes also poured in from colleagues and admirers during the ceremony. A former journalist currently serving in the Vice-Chancellor’s Office described Momodu as a towering figure whose career continues to influence emerging media practitioners. He added that encounters with the media icon often serve as “masterclasses” in depth, professionalism, and insight.
The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) also commended Momodu’s legacy, describing him as a prominent figure whose work has strengthened the profession and elevated its global relevance.
Dr. Adeagbo, in her remarks, said the award was well deserved, emphasising that Momodu’s career reflects the transformative power of the media in shaping society and driving national development.
As part of the activities marking the Library Week, the university also inaugurated the H.O. Library Club, with Momodu serving as the Guest Reader. The 2026 edition of the programme is themed “Building a Knowledge Society: Library and Information as Variables in Academia–Industry Performance.”
The event featured the unveiling of Momodu’s portrait at the venue, symbolising a career widely regarded as one marked by resilience, excellence, and a lasting influence on Nigerian journalism and cultural discourse.
