The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has held a capacity enhancement workshop for its legal officers, stressing the need for improved professional service delivery and strict statutory compliance.
Speaking at the one-day training in Abuja, NYSC Director General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, underscored the critical role of legal officers in shaping management decisions, particularly during moments that demand strict adherence to statutory provisions.
Nafiu explained that the annual training reflects his administration’s policy thrust of *“Strengthening the NYSC Scheme to Better Meet the Evolving Needs of Contemporary Nigerian Society and Ensure its Future Relevance.”* He urged participants to continually upgrade their skills, embrace emerging technologies, and remain committed to delivering objective legal advice and quality representation.
“I charge you all to build on existing achievements by redoubling your efforts in the performance of your duties. Do not relent in rendering objective legal advice and quality representation to the Scheme,” Nafiu said.
The Director General commended the Legal Unit for its diligence in handling litigations and coordinating the Corps Legal Aid Scheme (CLAS), describing it as one of the most impactful Community Development Service (CDS) projects. He assured participants of management’s continued support, including the provision of tools to strengthen legal representation across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
In his remarks, the Director of Legal Services, Barrister Chris Ogar, said the workshop, themed *“Optimizing the Capacity of NYSC Legal Officers for More Effective Service to the Scheme,”* was designed to deepen knowledge, enhance competence, and expose officers to best practices in legal service delivery.
The training drew participants from all 36 states, the FCT Secretariat, and the National Directorate Headquarters.
