NYSC DG Urges 2026 Batch ‘A’ Corps Members to Uphold Service, Patriotism

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has charged corps members to remain steadfast in the core values of the Scheme as they begin their compulsory national service, describing those ideals as the backbone of NYSC’s survival and relevance over the years.

General Nafiu gave the charge on Monday while addressing 2026 Batch ‘A’ Stream One corps members at the Osun State NYSC Orientation Camp in Ede, where he emphasised discipline, patriotism and selfless service as non-negotiable principles for every participant in the Scheme.

He said values such as selfless service, patriotism, integrity, efficiency, commitment and teamwork have sustained the NYSC since its establishment in 1973, adding that the responsibility of preserving them now lies with the current generation of corps members.

“These virtues are the pillars that have kept the Scheme waxing strong since 1973,” Nafiu said. “Present and future corps members must continue to imbibe them in order to sustain the legacies of the founding fathers of the NYSC.”

The Director-General reminded the corps members that the Scheme was created to promote national unity, integration and development by mobilising the intellectual and creative capacities of young Nigerian graduates from diverse ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds.

He urged them to see themselves as strategic stakeholders in Nigeria’s development process, stressing that the service year should be viewed as an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to society rather than as a mere obligation.

Quoting the NYSC Anthem, Nafiu said, “Nigeria is ours, Nigeria we serve.” He added that the task of nation-building belongs primarily to Nigerians.

“We cannot expect foreigners to come and build our country for us. Development requires sacrifice, commitment and a genuine sense of ownership,” he noted.

The NYSC boss further advised the corps members to be adaptable, as they would be deployed to different parts of the country after the orientation course. According to him, positive adjustment to new environments is essential for peaceful coexistence and effective service delivery.

He also urged them to respect the customs, traditions and values of their host communities, noting that mutual respect fosters cooperation at the grassroots and strengthens national cohesion.

General Nafiu cautioned the corps members against conduct capable of tarnishing the image of the Scheme, reminding them that wherever they serve, they represent their families, institutions and states of origin.

Earlier, the Osun State NYSC Coordinator, Mr. Ekeng Ita Kubiangha, disclosed that 1,864 corps members were registered at the camp. He commended their conduct, describing them as disciplined and enthusiastic participants in camp activities.

Kubiangha assured the Director-General that the orientation camp was running smoothly and that officials were committed to ensuring the safety, welfare and proper training of the corps members throughout the orientation period.

The visit ended with renewed calls for dedication, discipline and patriotism as the 2026 Batch ‘A’ Stream One corps members prepare to move from orientation to active national service across Osun State and beyond.
