NYSC Delay Sparks Outrage as NANS Condemns Arrest of UNILESA Graduate, Alleges Brutality

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has strongly condemned the arrest of a graduate linked to the University of Ilesa (UNILESA), describing the incident as a violation of students’ rights and calling for urgent intervention over delays in National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) mobilisation.

The controversy centres on Temitope Adedoyin, a graduate of the former Osun State College of Education, Ilesa, who was reportedly arrested after protesting his prolonged exclusion from the NYSC mobilisation list. According to reports, the graduate had visited the university to demand clarification over the delay affecting his mobilisation process.

University authorities, however, offered a different account of the incident. The institution’s registrar reportedly stated that security agencies were invited after the graduate allegedly attempted to lock the university’s Senate Building during the protest.

Reacting to the development, NANS South-West Zone D condemned the arrest, describing it as unjustified and indicative of deeper administrative problems affecting graduates awaiting NYSC mobilisation. In a statement signed by its coordinator, Comrade Josiah Adeyemo, the student body argued that the graduate had waited for more than two years to be mobilised despite possessing a notification of results and confirmation of academic completion.

The association further alleged that the graduate was physically assaulted during the incident, accusing university authorities of allowing acts of brutality against a former student who was simply seeking answers about his future. NANS described the situation as a breach of fundamental human rights and a troubling reflection of governance issues within the institution.

The student body also warned that continued delays in mobilising eligible graduates could trigger wider protests among students across the South-West region. It emphasised that the rights and welfare of Nigerian students must be protected and that institutions must be held accountable for administrative lapses that affect graduates’ career prospects.

Investigations by education stakeholders indicate that cases of delayed NYSC mobilisation are not isolated, with some graduates across institutions citing documentation challenges, verification issues, and administrative bottlenecks as major factors responsible for the delays.

As tensions continue to rise, NANS has called for the immediate resolution of the matter and urged authorities to ensure that affected graduates are mobilised without further delay.
