NUC Approves 11 Postgraduate Programmes for Atiba University, Oyo

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved 11 postgraduate programmes for Atiba University, Oyo (AUO), Oyo State, to commence from the 2025/2026 academic session.

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved 11 postgraduate programmes for Atiba University, Oyo (AUO), Oyo State, to commence from the 2025/2026 academic session.

The approval was conveyed in a letter addressed to the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Sunday Okeniyi, and signed by the NUC Director of Academic Planning, Abubakar Girei.

According to the commission, the approval followed a resource verification exercise conducted by panels of experts to assess the human and material resources available for the proposed postgraduate programmes at Atiba University.

Part of the letter read:
“The Vice-Chancellor is pleased to recall that a resource verification visit was carried out by a panel of experts to some proposed postgraduate programmes in Atiba University, Oyo State, with a view to assessing the human and material resources available for their establishment. I am directed to inform the Vice-Chancellor that the Executive Secretary has considered and approved the establishment of the full-time mode of the following postgraduate programmes to be run on the main campus of the university with effect from the 2025/2026 academic session.”

The approved programmes include: PGD Accounting; PGD and M.Sc. Business Administration; PGD, M.Sc. and PhD Public Administration; PGD, M.Sc. and PhD Computer Science; MBA Business Administration; M.Sc. and PhD Political Science; M.Sc. and PhD International Relations; M.Sc. and PhD Economics; M.Sc. and PhD Sociology; M.Sc. and PhD English; and M.Sc. Nursing.

However, the NUC directed the university to address identified deficiencies in the PGD, M.Sc. and PhD Computer Science programmes, particularly the need to provide a dedicated research laboratory and reliable internet services for effective teaching and research.

In the same vein, the commission declined approval for some proposed programmes, including M.Sc. and PhD Accounting, PhD Business Administration, M.Sc. and PhD Microbiology, and PhD Nursing Science.

The NUC explained that the non-approval was due to shortcomings such as inadequate qualified staff, insufficient classrooms and laboratories, weak infrastructure, and limited library resources.

The development is expected to expand Atiba University’s postgraduate offerings and strengthen its capacity for advanced teaching and research, subject to full compliance with NUC standards.
