Kano, Nigeria – The National Universities Commission (NUC) Accreditation Team for the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) programme has submitted its exit report to Bayero University, Kano (BUK), following a comprehensive evaluation of the faculty. The presentation took place on Wednesday, 19 November 2025, with Vice-Chancellor Professor Haruna Musa, FSI, receiving the report.

Leading the delegation, Professor Akhiwu Benjamin of the University of Jos praised BUK for its remarkable progress in dental education, highlighting the establishment of an Oral Pathology Library, the acquisition of new academic resources, and the awarding of a contract for the construction of Dental Clinics—a development described as crucial for enhancing clinical training.

Professor Benjamin also commended the high level of staff motivation within the Faculty of Dentistry, emphasizing the cordial working environment and shared commitment to producing dental professionals capable of competing globally. He explained that the accreditation exercise was conducted in strict accordance with NUC quality assurance standards and included recommendations for further improvement.

Responding on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Development), Professor Amina Mustapha, reiterated BUK’s commitment to continuous quality enhancement. She described accreditation as a peer-review mechanism that allows universities to identify gaps and refine academic processes, assuring the panel that all observations and recommendations would be addressed.

The accreditation team included Professor Oke Gbemisola (University of Ibadan), Associate Professor Yemitan Toluwase (Lagos State University), and NUC representative Mr. Daniel Sanusi. The delegation was accompanied by Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, Professor Kelvin Omejie, Head of the Department of Dentistry, Dr. Jamiu Abannikanda, Deputy Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Professor Bashir Kaka, and other departmental heads and staff.

The visit underscores BUK’s commitment to maintaining high standards in dental education and training globally competitive professionals.
