NSCIA Commends Katsina Governor for Reintroducing CRS, Urges Southern States to Reciprocate

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has applauded Katsina State Governor, Dr. Dikko Umar Radda, for reintroducing Christian Religious Studies (CRS) in primary and secondary schools across the state, describing the move as a demonstration of fairness, justice, and respect for religious diversity.

In a statement signed by its Secretary-General, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, the council said the decision reflects Islamic principles that uphold the rights of minorities to freedom of belief and worship.

> “Islam condemns the persecution of minorities in its entirety. From the earliest years of Islamic governance, Prophet Muhammad (SAW) emphasised the protection of religious rights. Governor Radda’s action is, therefore, a worthy example of equity and inclusiveness,” the statement read.

While endorsing the teaching of CRS in Muslim-majority states, the NSCIA urged governors in the South-East, South-South, and parts of the South-West to reciprocate by allowing Islamic Religious Studies (IRS) in their schools.

The council cited Rivers State University as an example of what it described as systemic discrimination, alleging that Muslim students and staff had been denied spaces to observe their daily prayers despite multiple court rulings in their favour.

It recalled that the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt and the Court of Appeal had upheld the rights of Muslim students to worship freely, but the state government challenged the rulings up to the Supreme Court, where the case remains pending since 2018.

The council stressed that Nigeria’s unity and progress depend on the willingness of political leaders to uphold justice, embrace pluralism, and eschew partisanship in governance.
