Lagos, November 2025 – The Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) has reiterated its dedication to safeguarding Nigeria’s digital space and collaborating with government agencies to curb cybercrime and misuse of digital resources.
Speaking in Lagos, NiRA President Adesola Akinsanya emphasized that the association is fully aligned with government efforts to provide a safe and secure online environment for citizens. “NiRA has been in strategic engagement with key agencies, including the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the Office of the National Security Adviser, and law enforcement agencies to discourage internet fraud,” he said.
Mr. Akinsanya highlighted NiRA’s role in providing technical insights, data intelligence, and policy recommendations on domain name registration, DNS abuse, and traceability, contributing to the government’s broader cyber-security strategy.
“Through partnerships with international bodies such as the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and the African Network Information Centre (AFRINIC), NiRA adheres to global best practices to ensure the Nigerian namespace is secure, credible, and trusted,” he added.
The comments come amid allegations that internet fraudsters, both within and outside Africa, use Nigerian and other African IP addresses to commit crimes abroad, giving the appearance that they are operating locally. Addressing this, Mr. Akinsanya clarified the distinction between IP addresses and domain names, noting that IP address management is under AFRINIC, while NiRA manages .NG domain registration.
Nonetheless, he condemned the misuse of digital resources by any Nigerian, stressing that NiRA has implemented robust internal controls to protect the integrity of the country’s digital identity. “We have instituted multi-layer verification processes and registrar compliance requirements to discourage fraudulent registrations,” he said.
NiRA also monitors Domain Name System (DNS) abuse and collaborates with relevant security and regulatory agencies to take prompt action when suspicious activity linked to a .NG domain is detected. Over the past two decades, the association has complemented enforcement with proactive measures, including public awareness campaigns, capacity-building workshops, and stakeholder sensitization programs to promote digital responsibility and cyber ethics.
Looking ahead, Mr. Akinsanya said NiRA is investing in Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC) to enhance the resilience of the .NG domain. He reaffirmed the association’s focus on local content hosting, digital sovereignty, and reinforcing Nigeria’s online identity as a symbol of credibility, innovation, and national pride.
“Through continuous innovation and stronger collaborations, we aim to build trust in the .NG brand and maintain Nigeria’s digital space as safe, secure, and globally respected,” he concluded.
