Nigerian Researcher Bolaji Fakorede Secures Global DAAD PhD Scholarship

A young researcher from Federal University Oye‑Ekiti (FUOYE), Bolaji Fakorede, has secured the prestigious doctoral scholarship of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) for the 2026/2027 academic session, marking a significant academic milestone for both the scholar and the institution.

Fakorede, an MSc graduate of the Department of Soil Science and Land Resources Management at FUOYE, currently serves as an adjunct lecturer in the same department, where he contributes to teaching and ongoing research activities.

The award followed a rigorous international selection process under the DAAD Doctoral Programmes in Germany. The programme evaluates applicants based on academic excellence, research potential, and recommendations from expert selection panels.

During his postgraduate studies at FUOYE, Fakorede conducted his Master of Science research under the supervision of prominent soil scientists, A. S. Fasina and T. S. Babalola, whose mentorship played a vital role in shaping his academic development and research direction.

Through the scholarship, the FUOYE scholar will pursue advanced doctoral training in Germany, focusing on environmental sustainability and land management in the face of climate change.

His proposed doctoral study, titled “Assessing Land Management Vulnerability and Sustainability under Climate Change in Nigeria: A Modeling Approach,” aims to examine how climate change influences land management systems across Nigeria.

The research will assess the vulnerability of agricultural land resources while proposing sustainable land-use strategies through the application of advanced modelling techniques to support long-term environmental resilience.

As part of the programme, the Department of Soil Science and Land Resources Management at FUOYE will collaborate with the researcher during the fieldwork phase of the project in Nigeria, offering academic and institutional support for data collection and related research activities.

Reacting to the development, the Vice-Chancellor of Federal University Oye‑Ekiti, Joshua Olalekan Ogunwole, congratulated Fakorede for the international recognition, describing the achievement as a reflection of the university’s expanding global academic presence.

According to him, the success of the young scholar underscores the institution’s commitment to producing researchers capable of addressing pressing environmental and developmental challenges through innovative research.

The German Academic Exchange Service scholarship is widely regarded as one of the world’s most competitive international funding programmes supporting postgraduate education and research.

Fakorede’s achievement further strengthens the growing international research profile of Federal University Oye‑Ekiti and highlights the university’s increasing participation in global academic collaborations.
