A Nigerian-born cybersecurity professional, Grace Durotolu, has urged the Federal Government to adopt an artificial intelligence–driven national cybersecurity policy to protect the nation’s critical infrastructure from increasingly sophisticated digital threats.
Durotolu, who is currently researching the intersection of AI and cyber defense, warned that traditional security frameworks were no longer sufficient against advanced persistent threats, zero-day exploits, and complex social engineering tactics that define modern cyber warfare.
“Conventional signature-based security measures have been found to be insufficient against advanced persistent threats, zero-day exploits, and advanced social engineering attacks which define the new form of cyber warfare,” she said.
Her recent study, *Leveraging AI and Machine Learning for Threat Detection and Adversarial Defense in Cybersecurity*, revealed that AI-powered solutions can achieve detection accuracy rates above 95 percent while cutting false positives by as much as 60 percent.
According to her, machine learning and deep learning models are capable of analysing massive data streams in real time, detecting anomalies, identifying adversarial attacks, and mitigating risks before they escalate. The study further highlighted the promise of explainable AI, ensemble learning, and federated learning in building fast, privacy-preserving, and distributed cyber defense systems.
Durotolu stressed that high-value targets such as power grids and industrial control systems remain particularly vulnerable. “AI must not only defend but also enable resilience,” she said, calling on governments and businesses to adopt adaptive, risk-based strategies to secure both national and organizational survival.
Her research also explores how AI can strengthen national cybersecurity policies, particularly in protecting supply chains and small and medium enterprises through compliance models tailored to their needs.
As Director of a Cyber Lab, Durotolu emphasized the importance of workforce readiness, urging organizations to invest in training and recruitment to build capacity for managing AI-powered security infrastructure.
“Organizations must invest in training programs and recruitment strategies to build the necessary skill sets for managing AI-powered security systems,” she said.
Durotolu, who holds a master’s degree in Computer Science (Cybersecurity concentration) from Troy University, Alabama, and a bachelor’s degree from Redeemer’s University, Nigeria, said her vision is for a future where intelligent, adaptive systems safeguard national infrastructure and power the growth of digital economies.
