Nigeria, Uganda Partner to Align Skills Certification for Stronger Technical Education

Nigeria and Uganda have begun efforts to harmonise their skills certification systems as part of a new partnership aimed at strengthening technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in both..

The collaboration was formalised during a benchmarking visit by the Uganda Vocational and Technical Assessment Board (UVTAB) to the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) in Benin City, Edo State.

Speaking during the engagement, the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of NABTEB, Dr Mohammed Mohammed, described the initiative as a significant step toward building a credible and globally competitive technical education assessment framework across Africa.

According to him, the partnership underscores the growing need for stronger cooperation among African countries in developing a coordinated TVET system capable of producing skilled and employable graduates.

“I must confess, this visit carries an extraordinary significance not just for NABTEB and UVTAB as institutions, but for the broader TVET landscape across the African continent,” Mohammed said.

He added that Africa’s economic development would remain limited without robust technical education systems that equip young people with practical skills required in modern industries.

Mohammed further noted that NABTEB has continued to collaborate with regulatory bodies, industries and international partners to ensure its certifications remain globally relevant and aligned with labour market demands.

The benchmarking visit is expected to allow both institutions to exchange expertise on examination development, assessment procedures and quality assurance mechanisms in technical education.

Leader of the Ugandan delegation, Engineer Albert Akovuku, said the engagement goes beyond institutional collaboration and reflects the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and Uganda.

He noted that both countries share a Pan-African legacy of cooperation dating back to the 1960s, with collaboration spanning diplomatic, legal and educational sectors.

“We are not strangers, but partners in the progress of the African continent,” Akovuku stated.

Akovuku explained that Uganda’s interest in engaging NABTEB was influenced by Nigeria’s well-established TVET framework, which he described as a valuable model for reforms currently being pursued in his country.

He added that Uganda aims to transition toward a digital, competency-based and industry-driven assessment system in line with its Vision 2040 national development plan.

Also speaking at the event, Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, represented by Assistant Director of Technology and Science Education, Kolawole Osundeyi, said benchmarking visits remain essential for institutional learning and policy reforms.

Osundeyi commended the Ugandan delegation for engaging NABTEB, describing the board as one of Nigeria’s leading institutions responsible for assessing technical and business education.

The partnership is expected to deepen cooperation between both countries as they work toward developing a more standardised and industry-responsive TVET system capable of improving graduate employability across the African continent.
