President Bola Tinubu has announced plans to recruit tens of thousands of police officers to tackle rising insecurity across Nigeria, following a recent spate of kidnappings and violent attacks.
The move comes just days after gunmen abducted hundreds of students from a Catholic school in northern Nigeria, reigniting national and international concern over the safety of children and communities.
President Tinubu’s announcement also follows pressure from the United States, with President Donald Trump urging Abuja to protect its Christian population. Washington has reportedly floated tariff threats if Nigeria fails to curb the unrest.
Analysts have warned that external pressure could inadvertently exacerbate the situation, as criminal groups see opportunities to demand larger ransoms from Nigerian authorities seeking swift resolutions.
Meanwhile, the World Food Programme (WFP) has sounded the alarm over a worsening humanitarian crisis, noting that millions displaced by violence face unprecedented levels of hunger.
President Tinubu’s security expansion initiative signals a major government response aimed at restoring stability while addressing both criminal activity and the broader humanitarian impact of prolonged violence.
