In a landmark moment for Nigeria’s education sector, 14-year-old Adeolu Oluwadamilola Ooreofe has been crowned the 2026 African Spelling Bee Champion (Junior Category) after a stellar performance at the continental competition held in Harare, Zimbabwe.

The young scholar from St. Lawrence Metropolitan College, Ekiti State, outshone contestants from more than twenty African countries, securing a historic victory for both Ekiti State and Nigeria on the continental academic stage.

Throughout the competition, Damilola displayed remarkable linguistic mastery, composure, and confidence. Judges and event officials noted that her precision and calm demeanor set her apart, particularly during the high-pressure final rounds. One judge described her performance as “exceptional,” highlighting her accuracy, clarity, and remarkable poise under pressure.

Damilola’s journey to the African crown reflects years of dedication and steady progress. She first emerged winner at the Ekiti State Spelling Bee, before advancing to the national competition in Port Harcourt where she finished second, securing her place at the African championship.

Speaking after her victory, the young champion expressed gratitude and pride in representing her country.

“I believed in myself and practiced every day,” she said. “This win is for my family, my school, and Nigeria.”

The continental contest brought together top young spellers from across Africa, including participants from South Africa, Ethiopia, Rwanda, and Malawi. Observers described the final rounds as fiercely competitive, with several brilliant contestants, but Damilola maintained consistent accuracy while others stumbled.

“It was not an easy contest,” an event coordinator revealed. “Every participant was outstanding, but she remained exceptional till the very end.”

For her achievement, Damilola received a $5,000 educational scholarship and an award plaque, recognizing her outstanding academic excellence. Education stakeholders have described the scholarship as a meaningful investment in her future academic journey.

A teacher from her school noted, “This scholarship will go a long way in supporting her education. She truly deserves it.”

Damilola’s victory is the culmination of an impressive track record in spelling competitions over the years. Her achievements include:

  • 2nd place – 2023 MTN Spelling Bee
  • 2nd place – 2024 Ekiti State Spelling Bee
  • 5th place – 2025 Africa Spelling Bee
  • 2nd place – 2025 Nigeria Spelling Bee

Her coach, Mr. Gbenga Julius, attributed her success to discipline, resilience, and consistent mentorship.

“Damilola is disciplined and hardworking,” he said. “Her success proves that consistency, dedication, and proper mentorship produce excellent results.”

The young champion is now preparing for an even bigger stage as she is set to represent Africa at the World Spelling Bee scheduled to take place in China later this year. Education stakeholders across the continent are optimistic that she will once again make Africa proud.

“We are confident she will perform brilliantly on the global stage,” her coach added.

Meanwhile, education advocates have called on the Ekiti State Government and the Federal Government of Nigeria to formally recognize and celebrate her achievement. Many believe that honoring such excellence will inspire thousands of young students across the country to pursue academic distinction.

As one stakeholder noted, “Damilola’s victory is not just personal; it is a powerful reminder of the potential of Nigerian students when they are given the right support and opportunities.”
