The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), Akintunde Sawyerr, has led a high-level delegation to Bayero University Kano (BUK) as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the implementation of the Federal Government’s student loan programme across Nigerian tertiary institutions.

The visit formed part of NELFUND’s nationwide stakeholder engagement initiative aimed at deepening collaboration with universities and ensuring the smooth rollout of the student loan scheme designed to expand access to higher education.

During the meeting with the management of Bayero University Kano, discussions centred on assessing operational progress and identifying strategies to enhance the effectiveness of the loan programme. Both parties examined ways to improve coordination between institutions and the agency to ensure students can access financial support with minimal obstacles.

Sawyerr emphasised the crucial role of universities in the successful implementation of the initiative, noting that institutional cooperation remains central to achieving the objectives of the loan programme. According to him, strong partnerships with tertiary institutions are essential for ensuring that the scheme functions efficiently and benefits eligible students nationwide.

The engagement also addressed key operational areas including the student application process, verification systems, and the need to maintain transparency and accountability in the disbursement of funds. These mechanisms, officials noted, are critical to building trust in the programme and preventing administrative bottlenecks that could hinder access to loans.

The Federal Government’s student loan scheme is designed to remove financial barriers that prevent many Nigerians from accessing higher education. Under the initiative, eligible students in public tertiary institutions can obtain interest-free loans to support their academic pursuits.

NELFUND officials explained that continuous engagement with universities across the country is part of a broader strategy to improve awareness of the scheme, strengthen institutional support systems, and ensure that the programme operates smoothly at all participating institutions.

The visit to Bayero University Kano is expected to further consolidate collaboration between the agency and tertiary institutions as the government intensifies efforts to bridge the gap in education financing and support academic advancement for Nigerian students.
