The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) says consultations are at an advanced stage for the constitution and inauguration of its Presidential Campaign Council ahead of the 2027 general elections, as the party begins nationwide mobilisation of election agents.

The party said its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, had been given broad latitude to nominate key officers who will coordinate the presidential campaign.

In a statement issued on Monday by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the NDC said Obi and Kwankwaso had held several meetings with National Leader, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, and other senior party officials as efforts to finalise the campaign structure continued.

According to the party, a comprehensive organogram for the presidential campaign was prepared in August and forwarded to Obi and Kwankwaso for their input. Nominations have also been received from stakeholders across the country.

The party said the presidential candidate and his running mate would nominate principal officers including the Director-General, Deputy Director-General for the North, campaign spokesman and deputy spokesman, Head of New Media, Finance Director and Deputy Finance Director.

The proposed finance officials are expected to work with the NDC National Treasurer in managing funds raised for the presidential campaign. The party said campaign funds would be paid into a dedicated account and managed in line with applicable campaign-finance and electoral reporting requirements.

The NDC added that a campaign timetable had been proposed, although some arrangements concerning funding and fundraising were still being finalised.

The inauguration of the Presidential Campaign Council was initially expected in the first week of September but was postponed. The party said a new date would be announced after receiving the remaining input from the candidates.

NDC Begins Agent Mobilisation

Beyond the presidential campaign structure, the party has directed its state and local government chairmen to begin identifying and compiling lists of party agents ahead of the elections.

The officials have been given two weeks to convene meetings involving candidates and other stakeholders and submit proposed lists for consideration by the party leadership.

The process is expected to produce separate lists covering the National Assembly elections and the governorship and State House of Assembly elections.

The proposed agents will undergo scrutiny and ratification before training begins, according to the party.

The committee overseeing the exercise will be chaired by the NDC Deputy National Chairman (South), Babatunde Alli, with Vin Martin Ilo as secretary. Other members include Yunusa Tanko, representing the Obidient Movement; Nafiu Dankura, representing the Kwankwasiyya Movement; and the party’s six zonal National Vice Chairmen.

Party Clarifies Campaign Council Structure

The development comes days after the Obi-Kwankwaso Movement, a support group backing the NDC presidential ticket, announced a 59-member campaign council comprising zonal and state coordinators and directors responsible for mobilisation, strategy, legal affairs, security and other functions.

However, the NDC subsequently dissociated itself from that structure, saying the support group was not authorised to constitute or announce a campaign council on behalf of the party.

The party has now clarified that the official NDC Presidential Campaign Council will be constituted and unveiled separately.

The NDC also urged its candidates and supporters to avoid internal disputes and concentrate on their respective campaigns, while emphasising the need for candidates contesting under the party’s platform to work within the broader organisational structure of the party.

The latest moves indicate that the party is focusing on completing its campaign leadership structure, finalising its funding arrangements and establishing its election-day organisation as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify.
