The National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) has ordered the closure of 22 unaccredited colleges of education across Nigeria, following an intensified crackdown on illegal tertiary institutions undermining the country’s education system.
The commission, in a statement on its official website, disclosed that the affected colleges failed to meet the minimum standards required for operation after a personnel audit and financial monitoring exercise conducted across all 21 federal colleges of education.
Although the names of the institutions were not released, the NCCE stressed that the move was part of ongoing efforts to sanitise the sector and protect students from falling victim to unrecognised schools.
The crackdown follows President Bola Tinubu’s directive to regulatory bodies, including the National Universities Commission (NUC), the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), and the NCCE, to eradicate illegal higher education institutions nationwide.
Speaking recently at the 14th convocation of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) in Abuja, President Tinubu—represented by Rakiya Ilyasu, Director of University Education at the Federal Ministry of Education—condemned “certificate millers” who exploit unsuspecting students and erode the credibility of Nigeria’s education system.
> “This administration remains committed to strengthening the integration of all agencies involved in the administration of education to enhance efficiency and quality,” the President said.
He further noted that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), NUC, NBTE, and NCCE are collaborating to ensure that cases of forgery and the proliferation of unrecognised institutions are eliminated both within and outside the country.
The NCCE reaffirmed that the closures are part of broader reforms aimed at safeguarding the integrity of teacher education and improving standards in Nigeria’s colleges of education.
