The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has taken steps to promote digital inclusion among young women by hosting 185 female students on an industry-based ICT exposure tour in Abuja.
The initiative forms part of the Federal Government’s Girls in ICT empowerment programme, coordinated by the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, aimed at equipping young Nigerians with relevant digital and technology skills.
According to NCC Director of Public Affairs, Nnenna Ukoha, the students were selected from across the country’s geopolitical zones, including participants with backgrounds in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
She explained that the excursion was designed to expose the girls to the telecommunications sector, inspire interest in technology careers, and bridge the gender gap in the ICT industry.
Ukoha said the visit formed part of activities under the National Girls in ICT Programme, which promotes digital literacy, mentorship, and innovation among young women.
She noted that participants were introduced to the evolution of telecommunications in Nigeria and how the sector has developed from early communication systems to modern digital infrastructure.
The students also toured exhibits at the NCC Museum, where they viewed historical communication tools that highlighted the industry’s transformation over time.
Speaking during the programme, the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Nigerian Communications Commission, Dr. Aminu Maida, said the initiative aligns with the Commission’s commitment to digital literacy and youth empowerment.
Represented by the Director of Research and Development, Babagana Digima, Maida said exposing young people to the history and evolution of telecommunications would help them better understand the sector and inspire future innovation.
He added that such engagements are essential in preparing young Nigerians to take active roles in the country’s growing digital economy.
According to him, the programme is designed to spark curiosity among students and encourage them to envision careers in technology and innovation-driven fields.
The NCC reiterated its commitment to supporting initiatives that promote inclusion, skill development, and increased participation of women in the ICT sector.
