The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has restated its commitment to clamp down on unaccredited institutions parading themselves as polytechnics, warning that such entities pose a grave threat to Nigeria’s educational integrity and the future of unsuspecting students.
Speaking during an accreditation exercise at Harvarde College of Science, Business and Management Studies, Obada, Abeokuta, the Director of Polytechnic and Allied Programmes, NBTE, Dr. Fatimah Kabir Umar, said the board would not relent in its fight against “mushroom” institutions lacking accreditation, facilities, and qualified staff.
“We have been fighting against mushroom entities calling themselves what they are not. We won’t stop until such establishments are eradicated, in the interest of safeguarding the nation’s commitment to quality education,” Umar told reporters.
She emphasized that, despite existing challenges, polytechnic education in Nigeria remains a critical driver of skills acquisition and national development. “Knowledge is good, but in terms of execution, polytechnic education has been leading. That is why it continues to play a vital role in building a more technologically advanced and prosperous nation,” she added.
During the visit, Umar noted significant progress in facilities at Harvarde College but urged lecturers to invest more in personal development through professional registration, research, and academic publishing. She commended the school’s management for complementing the government’s efforts to provide quality tertiary education and urged them to maintain high standards in line with NBTE’s guidelines.
The Provost of the college, Dr. Oluwatosin Adebayo, disclosed that the NBTE team was at the institution for resource inspection and accreditation of eight programmes, including Journalism and Media Studies, Film and Multimedia Production, Accountancy, Business Administration, Law, Networking and Cloud Computing, Software and Web Development, alongside institutional accreditation.
Adebayo explained that the periodic exercise ensures quality assurance and allows eligible graduates of unbundled programmes such as Computer Science, Software Development, and Cybersecurity to participate in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
He reaffirmed the college’s commitment to continuous investment in infrastructure and academic excellence, pledging that the institution will remain a standard-bearer in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.
