The National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB), in partnership with key players in the education and industry sectors, has launched a comprehensive review and validation of syllabuses covering 26 trade areas in technical colleges across Nigeria.
The exercise, which opened in Abuja with a five-day workshop, is regarded as a turning point in technical and vocational education reform. NABTEB Registrar and Chief Executive, Dr. Mohammed Aminu Mohammed, described the initiative as “a historic step towards aligning Nigeria’s technical education with both global competitiveness and national development needs.”
The workshop has drawn together education regulators, curriculum experts, principals of technical colleges, and industry leaders, underscoring the breadth of collaboration behind the exercise. Upon completion, the revised syllabuses will be rolled out nationwide, marking a new era for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in the country.
Dr. Mohammed emphasized that the review spans both cutting-edge technologies and traditional vocations—ranging from robotics, machine learning, and smart agriculture to hospitality, cosmetology, fisheries, and aquaculture. He noted that the inclusion of programmes such as solar panel installations and green technology demonstrates Nigeria’s resolve to address pressing issues of energy and food security while preparing youths for the future of work.
“This initiative is more than a curriculum review—it is a strategic intervention to position technical education as the bedrock of economic diversification and technological independence,” he said. “Our industry partners have provided invaluable input, ensuring the new syllabuses are academically sound, practically relevant, and responsive to evolving market demands.”
Other speakers reinforced the significance of the reform. Representing principals of Federal Technical Colleges, Frank Omale, who also heads FTC, Orozo, hailed the initiative as “a milestone that will realign technical education with the aspirations of Nigeria.” He pledged that principals would fully support the roll-out of the new curricula while mentoring students to become not only skilled professionals but also disciplined and patriotic citizens.
Similarly, the Director of Technology and Science Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, Dr. Muyibat Olodu—represented by Mr. Kola Osundeyi—said the review was critical to raising the quality and relevance of technical education in line with global best practices. She urged stakeholders to integrate practical skills, emerging technologies, and innovative pedagogy into the new programmes.
The workshop continues through the week, with the expectation that the updated syllabuses will form a blueprint for producing a new generation of skilled Nigerian technicians, innovators, and entrepreneurs capable of driving national growth.
