The National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) has launched a comprehensive review and validation of 26 trade syllabi for technical colleges across Nigeria, in a move aimed at modernizing technical education and aligning it with global best practices.
The workshop formally opened on Monday at the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) in Abuja, with NABTEB’s Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Mohammed Aminu Mohammed, describing the initiative as a “historic moment in Nigeria’s journey towards educational excellence and economic transformation.”
Mohammed emphasized the importance of equipping graduates with 21st-century skills relevant to the demands of today’s labour market.
“Today’s initiative responds directly to the challenges of the 21st century, ensuring our graduates possess skills that are immediately applicable in today’s dynamic economy,” he said.
The 26 trade areas under review cover both emerging technologies and traditional vocations. They include Robotics, Coding and Machine Learning, Industrial Mechanics, Smart Agriculture, Cinematography and Creative Media Production, Automotive Mechatronics, Electrical and Solar PV Installations, Hospitality and Catering, Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology, as well as Fisheries and Aquaculture.
According to Mohammed, the inclusion of environmentally conscious programmes such as Smart Agriculture and Solar PV Installations demonstrates NABTEB’s commitment to sustainability and Nigeria’s leadership in green technology adoption.
He praised the collaboration between NABTEB and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), describing it as a model for inter-agency partnership, while also commending industry stakeholders for ensuring that the revised syllabi reflect current market realities.
“Industry partners have provided invaluable insights into market demands and emerging trends, ensuring these syllabi serve as practical roadmaps for career success,” he noted.
The registrar further assured that NABTEB would support implementation through continuous teacher training, strict quality assurance, and close collaboration with technical colleges to provide the necessary infrastructure and skilled instructors. He also urged industry players to complement the effort by offering internships, workplace learning opportunities, and mentorship programmes.
Mohammed expressed appreciation to the Honourable Minister of Education for policy support, as well as to the NBTE, industry experts, and stakeholders for their contributions. He called on participants in the review exercise to approach the task with diligence and a shared sense of responsibility.
