Metrospeed Opens Metro Smart City Project to YABATECH Engineering Students for Hands-On Learning

Students of the Civil Engineering department of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) have received rare hands-on exposure to large-scale construction after being hosted by Metrospeed at the ambitious..

The educational visit took the students to the site of the sprawling lagoon-front Metro Smart City project, where they observed the practical realities of engineering work beyond classroom theory. The field trip allowed them to witness the scale and complexity involved in building modern urban infrastructure.

The excursion was organised by geotechnical engineering lecturer and Chief Executive Officer of the Engineering Resource Academy, Dr. Omolola Adetona, who said the initiative was designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world engineering practice.

According to her, exposing students to ongoing construction projects is essential in preparing them for the demands of the profession.

She explained that civil engineering should not be confined to lecture halls, stressing that young engineers must experience how theoretical concepts translate into real structures and infrastructure in the built environment.

During the visit, the students toured sections of the expansive development and gained insight into the processes behind the project, which is designed as a large-scale modern urban community along the Lagos waterfront.

Speaking on the significance of the visit, Metrospeed’s Head of Sales and Marketing, Emike Ntiokiet, said the company sees the initiative as part of its broader commitment to supporting education and nurturing the next generation of engineering professionals.

She noted that with Lagos’ rapidly growing population and increasing housing demand, the future of urban development will rely heavily on innovative infrastructure rather than aesthetics alone.

Ntiokiet encouraged the students to think beyond conventional approaches to engineering and embrace new ideas that can shape sustainable cities.

The company also reaffirmed its willingness to continue opening its project sites to students and young professionals seeking practical exposure in engineering, construction, and urban development.
