LASUED Lecturers Accuse VC of Withholding Salary Arrears, Allowances

Academic staff of the Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) have accused the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bidemi Balikis Lafiaji-Okuneye, of withholding several months of salary harmonisation arrears and other statutory entitlements, despite claims that the Lagos State Government has already released the approved funds to the institution.

The lecturers alleged that the state government approved a harmonised salary structure granting a 25 per cent increment for junior academics and a 35 per cent increment for senior academics, alongside nine months’ arrears reportedly disbursed to university administrations across the state. However, LASUED staff insist the funds have not been fully paid to them.

According to the aggrieved academics, the matter has compounded long-standing welfare challenges within the institution. They further claimed that they are owed hazard and transportation allowances covering a period of about 72 months, describing the situation as a persistent crisis allegedly ignored by the university management.

“The situation is unacceptable. These are our legitimate entitlements, and we demand immediate action,” one senior academic said.

The staff also accused the management of discriminatory implementation of end-of-year bonuses. While Lagos State traditionally pays 100 per cent of basic salary as bonus to tertiary institution workers, LASUED lecturers reportedly receive significantly less, contrary to what obtains in other state-owned institutions.

The lecturers have therefore called on the Lagos State Government, the LASUED Governing Council and relevant oversight bodies to urgently investigate the allegations and compel immediate payment of all outstanding entitlements. They are also demanding greater transparency and accountability in the administration of university funds.

Warning of possible industrial unrest, the academics said the issue could escalate if not addressed promptly.

“We will not be silenced. We will continue to demand our rights until justice is done,” another lecturer said.

As of the time of filing this report, the management of LASUED had yet to issue an official response to the allegations. The development once again highlights the recurring struggles of academic staff in Nigerian universities over welfare, funding and institutional accountability.
