Lagos, WAEC Strengthen Partnership to Boost Exam Integrity and Introduce Computer-Based Testing

The Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has reaffirmed its partnership with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to enhance assessment standards and advance the integration of technology in examinations across the state.

This commitment was restated in a statement issued on Sunday following the latest meeting of the Lagos State Committee of WAEC, held under the supervision of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education.

The meeting, chaired by Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun, had in attendance the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite, senior officials from education districts, and representatives from the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) and other key agencies.

During the session, the committee reviewed its structure to align with the evolving education landscape in Lagos. Mr. Sutton, representing the committee, disclosed that the new composition would include the six Tutor-Generals/Permanent Secretaries, TESCOM, the Office of Education Quality Assurance, and the Parents Forum, to strengthen inclusivity and efficiency.

Commissioner Alli-Balogun reiterated the state government’s zero tolerance for examination malpractice, directing that any breaches and corresponding sanctions be duly communicated to schools through official channels. He emphasised Lagos State’s commitment to fairness, transparency, and merit-based assessment in all public examinations.

In his presentation, WAEC’s Zonal Coordinator, Mr. Rafiu Atoyebi, shared performance data across states and subjects and sensitised members on WAEC’s ongoing transition to computer-based testing (CBT). He explained that the Council would introduce a hybrid testing model, starting with pilot exams for selected subjects at Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB)-accredited centres across the country.

According to Atoyebi, the move to CBT represents “the future of assessment in West Africa,” aimed at reducing examination malpractice, overcoming logistical bottlenecks, and strengthening the credibility of results through technology. He assured stakeholders that connectivity and access challenges, particularly in rural areas, would be adequately addressed ahead of WAEC’s full computer-based WASSCE rollout by 2026.
