Lagos Introduces Artificial Intelligence to Monitor Schools, Streamline Registration

New digital reform targets better oversight, improved learning outcomes, and easier school registration processes.

The Lagos State Government has announced a major step toward transforming its education sector with the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics, and digital platforms to improve school monitoring and registration processes across the state.

The initiative was unveiled during the presentation of a new strategic plan by the state’s Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA), aimed at strengthening accountability and raising the standard of teaching and learning in schools.

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, explained that the reform will simplify procedures for school owners by automating the private school registration system. Under the new arrangement, proprietors will be able to process applications for provisional approval online without visiting government offices, making the process faster and more transparent.

He noted that the broader goal of the reform is to strengthen governance within the education sector and ensure that schools deliver better academic outcomes for students across Lagos.

Beyond registration, the state also plans to leverage AI-driven systems to improve the way schools are monitored. Officials say the digital tools will help evaluators track activities in classrooms, assess teaching quality, and ensure schools comply with required standards.

The Director-General of OEQA, Dr. Sulaimon Ogunmuyiwa, explained that the new strategy was developed after a detailed review revealed several operational challenges within the agency, including reliance on manual processes, weak collaboration among agencies, and a shortage of evaluators.

To address these issues, the strategic plan prioritises digital transformation, stronger inter-agency collaboration, improved staff capacity, and enhanced transparency in education regulation. The reform will also digitise key processes such as school approval, renewal, and accreditation, while ensuring stronger cybersecurity and data protection.

Officials added that although implementation has already begun, the transformation will take place gradually as the state invests in ICT infrastructure, trains personnel, and equips education evaluators with the skills needed to operate the new digital systems.

With more than 1,400 public schools, about two million learners, and over 160,000 teachers in Lagos, the government believes the technology-driven approach will significantly strengthen education quality assurance and rebuild public confidence in the system.

Ultimately, authorities say the reform is expected to reduce bureaucratic delays, improve school supervision, and deliver better learning outcomes for students across the state.
