Students across Lagos are receiving hands-on guidance on how to navigate the digital world safely and responsibly, as the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development ramps up efforts to build a digitally resilient generation.

The renewed campaign came into focus during a one-day digital resilience sensitisation programme held for students in Education District II. The engagement, hosted at Oriwu Senior Model College, exposed participants to real-world online risks while equipping them with practical strategies to safeguard their digital identities.

Addressing the students, the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Abubakre Ogunlende, emphasised that Lagos’ ambition to maintain its status as a leading smart city must be matched by a deliberate investment in raising digitally responsible young citizens. He described technology as neutral in itself, noting that its consequences—positive or harmful—are determined by how it is used. Ignorance, he warned, continues to leave many young users exposed to cyber threats.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Toyin Oke-Osanyintolu, framed digital resilience as both a social imperative and an economic necessity. According to her, unsafe online environments can erode youth confidence, restrict inclusion, and undermine development outcomes. Protecting young people in digital spaces, she said, is essential to securing the state’s long-term development goals.

Facilitators led students through interactive sessions focused on identifying online dangers, protecting personal data, reporting cyberbullying, and developing emotional resilience to withstand digital pressure. Officials explained that the initiative goes beyond routine awareness campaigns by providing practical tools that empower students to engage the internet with vigilance and confidence.

With internet penetration rising rapidly among young Nigerians, the Lagos State Government maintains that early exposure to ethical digital behaviour and online safety practices will help shape safer virtual communities and prepare students to thrive responsibly in an increasingly technology-driven society.
