The Lagos State Government has inaugurated Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Clubs across public primary schools, marking a major step toward nurturing socially responsible and sustainability-driven future leaders.
Speaking at the launch, the Special Adviser to the Governor on SDGs, Dr. Oreoluwa Finnih, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Office of SDGs, Mrs. Kaphayah Olayemi Sarumi, described the initiative as a deliberate strategy to embed sustainability values in children from an early stage of learning.
She explained that the programme goes beyond academic achievement, aiming to shape pupils with the right mindset for a just, inclusive and sustainable Lagos. According to her, the clubs are designed to inspire young learners to think critically about their roles in society and the environment.
Finnih noted that the initiative, driven under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 4 on Quality Education. She stressed that education must not be limited to literacy and numeracy but should also instill character, responsibility and global consciousness among the state’s over 3.3 million learners.
“Quality education must equip pupils with values and awareness that prepare them for leadership and citizenship in a rapidly changing world,” she said.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB), Dr. Hakkem Babatunde Shittu, said the SDGs Clubs would promote value-based learning and empower pupils to become agents of positive change through both individual and collective action.
He added that the clubs would expose pupils to key issues such as environmental protection, social inclusion and community development, while encouraging them to propose and implement practical solutions within their schools and neighbourhoods.
“The aim is to raise pupils who understand sustainability not just in theory, but in practice,” Shittu stated.
The inauguration attracted key stakeholders, including the Chairman, Co-Curricular, LASUBEB, Honourable Babajide Adewale Jimoh; the Board Secretary, Mr. Lamidi Hakeem Abiodun; education sector partners; and officials from the Office of Sustainable Development Goals.
The initiative reinforces Lagos State’s commitment to building a generation of informed, responsible and globally aware citizens, in line with its broader development and education agenda.
