Kwara Gov’t Sets Up Panel to Probe Polytechnic Protest, Directs Rector to Step Aside

Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has constituted a three-member panel to investigate the circumstances surrounding the recent student protest at the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin.

The panel, which has two weeks to complete its assignment, is chaired by the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Senior Ibrahim Sulyman. Other members are the Commissioner for Environment, Nafisat Buge, and the Permanent Secretary, Service Welfare, Dr. (Mrs.) Mercy Olufunke Shittu.

According to the terms of reference, the committee is to examine the remote and immediate causes of the protest, assess how the situation was managed, and recommend measures to prevent a recurrence. The panel is also expected to propose additional reforms aimed at strengthening institutional stability and growth, while engaging relevant stakeholders in the process.

In a related development, Governor AbdulRazaq has directed the Rector of the Polytechnic, Engr. Dr. Abdul Jimoh Mohammed, to step aside with immediate effect pending the outcome of the investigation. The most senior Deputy Rector has been appointed to oversee the administration of the institution in an acting capacity.

The decision was announced in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu, on Wednesday, January 21, 2026.

The protest erupted after students opposed the temporary use of the Polytechnic as an orientation camp for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). The development led to the closure of the institution and raised concerns over campus safety, student welfare and administrative decision-making.

The state government said the probe is aimed at ensuring accountability, restoring confidence, and safeguarding the academic environment of the Polytechnic.
