Kano State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ali Haruna Makoda, has admitted that the state has lacked credible data on out-of-school children for years, even as he cited UNESCO’s estimate that nearly one million children in Kano are currently out of school.
Speaking during the biannual meeting of the Kano State Education Sector Joint Steering Committee in Kaduna, Makoda said UNESCO’s 2024 report placed Nigeria at 10.2 million out-of-school children—representing 10% of the global figure—with Kano alone accounting for 7.6% (about 989,000 children).
> “We are working on modalities to generate authentic data and address this challenge. That is why the government has set up the Kano State Out-of-School Children Education Initiative Committee, which will be inaugurated tomorrow,” he disclosed.
The statement was signed by the ministry’s Director of Public Enlightenment, Alhaji Balarabe Abdullahi Kiru.
The two-day steering committee meeting brought together government agencies, lawmakers, traditional leaders, and development partners to review progress in the education sector, cross-fertilize ideas, and agree on new strategies for effective policy delivery.
The commissioner noted that the meeting assessed achievements recorded in the past six months, while also charting fresh priorities to improve learning outcomes.
Also speaking, the Technical Adviser to the Governor on Educational Reforms, Haladu Muhammad, highlighted discussions on the Kano mutual accountability framework, curriculum reforms, and the state’s 2025–2030 SDG roadmap.
Legislative backing was pledged by the Chairman, House Committee on SUBEB, Usman Abubakar Tasiu Kiru, and his counterpart on Education, Suleiman Mukhtar Madobi, who assured that the Assembly would support policies to reposition education in Kano.
The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammad Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II, represented by the District Head of Garko, Alhaji Muhd Aliyu, also pledged the Emirate’s support, stressing the importance of vocational education in empowering youths for self-reliance.
Development partners, including UNICEF, Save the Children, Plan International, FCDO’s PLANE project, and others, presented progress reports of their interventions in Kano, pledging continued collaboration with the state.
