Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has revived three additional state-owned entrepreneurship institutes abandoned for eight years under the previous administration, enrolling 1,000 new beneficiaries as part of a broad push to empower youth and women across the state.
The reinstated centres — Poultry Institute, Development Journalism Institute, and Artisan Fisheries Institute — are among the 26 state-owned entrepreneurship institutes designed to promote skills acquisition, job creation, and economic self-reliance.
Speaking on the development, Dr. Ibrahim Garba Muhammad, Special Adviser to the Governor on Human Resources and Secretary of the Steering Committee for the institutes, said the revival underscores Governor Yusuf’s commitment to human capital development and his resolve to create sustainable opportunities for Kano’s growing youth population.
According to him, the Poultry Institute has already admitted 600 women, who will be trained in bird breeding, feed formulation, disease control, and other poultry management techniques. He noted that the skills acquired will enhance food security and income generation for families in both rural and urban communities.
The Development Journalism Institute has enrolled 200 aspiring journalists and digital media practitioners, who will receive training in ethical reporting, media literacy, and digital communication — all aimed at strengthening responsible journalism and civic participation.
Similarly, the Artisan Fisheries Institute has admitted 200 small-scale fishers, who will be trained in aquaculture, sustainable fishing practices, and fish processing to boost local fish production and reduce reliance on external supply chains.
Dr. Ibrahim disclosed that since the committee’s inauguration in mid-2024, 14 institutes have been revived, while the remaining centres are at various stages of completion.
“So far, the reopened institutes have trained and empowered 3,570 youth and women,” he said.

Additionally, 250 beneficiaries have been admitted into the Informatics Institute and 250 into the Driving Institute, with training set to commence this month. With the latest admissions, total beneficiaries across all revived centres now stand at 5,870.
He added that the Kano Entrepreneurship Development Institute (KEDI) is also preparing to enroll another 250 youth and women for a fresh training cycle.
Dr. Ibrahim noted that the ongoing revival of the institutes reflects Governor Yusuf’s commitment to expanding technical and vocational education, strengthening the local economy, and fulfilling his campaign promises on human capital development.
He described the initiative as “a significant step toward achieving sustainable development goals in Kano State and building a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem that will drive long-term economic growth.”
