The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced a major inclusion policy for the 2026/2027 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), approving free application documents for persons with disabilities (PWDs) across the country.
The move, JAMB said, is part of its drive to eliminate barriers and guarantee equal access to higher education for candidates with physical and learning challenges.
Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, disclosed that the free forms will be issued through the Board’s JAMB Equal Opportunity Group (JEOG), which is responsible for coordinating special needs support during UTME.
“To support persons living with disabilities, JAMB will issue free application documents to all categories of persons living with disabilities,” Oloyede said.
He explained that eligible candidates must possess a minimum of five O’Level credits in not more than two sittings. Beneficiaries include candidates living with conditions such as Down syndrome, autism, dyslexia and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), among others.
Beyond free application forms, the Board also announced special learning support for visually impaired candidates. According to Oloyede, audiobooks in digital formats such as MP3, WMV and WMA will be provided to blind candidates to replace conventional printed materials and ensure ease of access on audio-enabled devices.
The registrar noted that the initiative reflects JAMB’s commitment to inclusive education and fair competition.
“This underscores our resolve to remove barriers to access and ensure that candidates with disabilities are given equal opportunities to pursue their academic aspirations,” he said.
Registration for the 2026/2027 UTME began on January 26 and is scheduled to close on February 28. JAMB urged qualified PWD candidates to take advantage of the opportunity and register within the stipulated period.
Education stakeholders have welcomed the policy, describing it as a practical step toward promoting equity in Nigeria’s admission system and ensuring that no candidate is left behind because of disability.
By offering free forms and accessible learning materials, JAMB is reinforcing its role in creating a more inclusive and supportive pathway to tertiary education in Nigeria.
