A fresh investigation by The Nigeria Education News has revealed a growing wave of entrepreneurship among undergraduates in Nigerian universities and polytechnics, as increasing numbers of students explore business ventures alongside their academic pursuits.
The development, amplified by social media advocacy and entrepreneurship-focused platforms, is driven by a widening belief that early exposure to business equips students with practical experience, financial independence and resilience well before graduation.
Interviews conducted across institutions in Lagos State, Oyo State and Osun State indicate that while many students express interest in entrepreneurship, hesitation persists. Fear of failure and the traditional expectation of securing paid employment after graduation continue to discourage some from taking the leap.
However, findings from the investigation suggest that students who venture into business — regardless of the outcome — acquire critical competencies rarely developed within the four walls of lecture halls. From financial management and marketing to customer relations and operational planning, student entrepreneurs are gaining hands-on experience that experts say significantly enhances their long-term competitiveness.
For those whose ventures succeed, the rewards extend beyond personal growth. The investigation identified thriving student-led enterprises in technology, tutoring services and small-scale agribusiness, some of which now generate steady income and provide employment opportunities for fellow undergraduates.
Academics and business mentors interviewed for the report argue that the long-standing emphasis on immediate post-graduation employment may inadvertently limit broader economic potential. Dr. Shalom Ibironke of Bowen University noted that early entrepreneurial exposure confronts students with real-world challenges that cannot be simulated in classrooms.
“Even when a business fails, the lessons learned often determine the success of future ventures,” she said.
Despite the growing interest, structured institutional support remains uneven. While some higher institutions operate innovation hubs, incubation centres or entrepreneurship courses, many student entrepreneurs still navigate the complexities of business formation independently. Nevertheless, participants report increased confidence, stronger leadership capacity and improved understanding of market dynamics.
The investigation also highlights psychological benefits associated with early business engagement. Students managing ventures while studying often demonstrate greater adaptability, problem-solving ability and intrinsic motivation — traits considered vital in Nigeria’s evolving economic landscape.
Case studies further reveal that student-run enterprises in digital services, fashion and agriculture can scale rapidly when supported with mentorship and access to microfinance. In one instance, a group of undergraduates in Abuja launched an online tutoring platform that now serves thousands of secondary school students nationwide.
Prof. John Iwuh of Redeemer’s University advised students to cultivate entrepreneurial thinking early rather than postponing it until after graduation.
“The earlier you begin, the more experience you gain, and the higher your chances of long-term success,” he said.
The report concludes that entrepreneurship is steadily shifting from a peripheral activity to a strategic pillar within Nigeria’s higher education landscape. Whether ventures ultimately succeed or fail, students who start early are emerging with practical expertise, financial literacy and innovative mindsets that position them for sustainable professional growth and economic independence.
