The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Offa and District Society, has hosted a sensitisation programme aimed at cultivating early interest in professional accounting among tertiary and senior secondary school students.

The initiative, themed “Catch Them Young,” took place on Thursday, January 15, 2026, at the Awa Ibrahim ICAN Resource Centre, Offa, and sought to expose students to the opportunities and benefits of becoming chartered accountants.

In his opening address, District Chairman Mr Oyediran Sheriffdeen explained that the programme is designed to orient, educate and inspire young school leavers, helping them develop a sustainable interest in the accounting profession. He emphasised that students need not wait until graduation to begin their journey.

“With O-Level results and five credit passes in relevant subjects, including English and Mathematics, students can start their path toward becoming chartered accountants,” Mr Sheriffdeen said. He also lauded the Local Organising Committee, chaired by Mr Lawal A. A., FCA, for ensuring the programme’s success.

Speaking on career prospects, Vice-Chancellor of Lens University, Dr Yisa Azeez, FCA, highlighted the various professional opportunities available to chartered accountants, including roles in internal audit, compliance, financial control, treasury, and internal control departments of financial institutions. Dr Azeez encouraged students to make use of the ICAN Resource Centre in Offa to register for examinations and start their professional journey early.

Also addressing participants, Mr Tejan Ibrahim, ACA, praised ICAN Offa and District for the initiative and urged students to stay focused and leverage the Institute’s resources to build successful careers.

In separate goodwill messages, the Ojomu of Offa, High Chief Joseph Akinola, and Offa Local Government Chairman, Hon. Suleiman Olatunji Omituntun, commended the society for enlightening students on the value of professional certification from an early age.

The event also featured the grand finale of a quiz competition organised for secondary schools in Offa and Oyun Local Government Areas. Bello Omotolani Usman of Offa Grammar School emerged as the winner, receiving ₦50,000, a souvenir, and a certificate. Ejiwunmi Faridat of Hamdallat International School was first runner-up with ₦30,000, a certificate, and a souvenir, while Aliyah Adeshipe finished second runner-up, winning ₦20,000, a certificate, and a souvenir.

The winners also received additional cash support from the Offa Local Government Chairman and the Ojomu of Offa, further encouraging students to pursue excellence in accounting and professional certification.
