The Management of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai (IBBUL), has uncovered a syndicate allegedly involved in the illegal sale of hostel bed spaces to students, especially newly admitted undergraduates, at exorbitant prices.
In a press statement signed by the Deputy Registrar (Information), Alhaji Baba Akote, the university expressed deep concern over the development, describing it as an exploitative and unacceptable practice that undermines the institution’s accommodation system.
According to the statement, the syndicate operates by securing hostel bed spaces through official channels at the beginning of the session, only to resell them to desperate students for profit, in clear violation of university regulations.
To tackle the situation, the University Management has directed the Student Affairs Division to commence a thorough investigation to identify and apprehend those involved in the racketeering. The institution warned that severe disciplinary measures await both perpetrators and collaborators.
“Anyone caught, both the seller and the buyer, will accordingly face the wrath of the University Management, as stringent measures are to be taken on them,” the statement warned.
IBBUL also issued important advisory guidelines to students to safeguard them from extortion and fraudulent accommodation deals, urging them to process hostel allocation strictly through official university channels, report any case of exploitation, and ensure all payments are made only via approved university portals.
The management reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring transparency, fairness, and adequate welfare for students, particularly freshers, as they settle into their academic journey.
