A dark cloud has descended on Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, as a student was tragically murdered by armed robbers in Niger State over the weekend.
According to reports, the victim, identified as a final-year student of the institution, was attacked by suspected robbers along a major road near the school campus. Eyewitnesses say the student was on his way home when the assailants intercepted him, demanding his valuables before shooting him at close range.
The attack reportedly took place late in the evening, raising fresh concerns over the state of security in the area, especially around student-dense communities.
Security agencies have since confirmed the incident. The Niger State Police Command said an investigation is underway, and efforts are ongoing to track down and apprehend the perpetrators.
The tragic news has sent shockwaves through the university community. Students and staff expressed deep sorrow, with many calling for improved security measures around the campus and its environs. The Students' Union Government (SUG) of IBBU also released a statement condemning the murder and demanding justice.
“This is a heartbreaking loss for us all. We call on security agencies to leave no stone unturned in bringing the killers to book,” the SUG President said.
University management has also expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and promised to work with security operatives to ensure student safety.
As the investigation continues, the community mourns a promising life cut short in yet another act of senseless violence.
