From a young girl in Nigeria with ambitious dreams to a trailblazer at one of the world’s most prestigious universities, Cynthia Ezinne Ohaeri’s journey is a powerful story of resilience, excellence, and global impact.
Cynthia, a First-Class graduate and valedictorian of Physics and Astronomy from the University of Nigeria, has made history as the first Nigerian admitted to the University of Oxford Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment, where she is currently pursuing a degree in Sustainability, Enterprise and the Environment.
Her remarkable academic journey was made possible through the prestigious Mastercard Foundation Scholarship at the University of Oxford, alongside the AfOx-Linacre Norman and Ivy-Lloyd Scholarships. She was also nominated for the highly competitive Weidenfeld-Hoffmann Scholarship and the Oxford Smith School Scholarship — recognitions that underscored the strength of her academic and leadership profile.
Long before receiving her Oxford admission, Cynthia had already envisioned the life she hoped to build. Years earlier, she created a folder on her laptop titled “My Oxford Dreams,” where she carefully stored scholarship links, essays, photographs, prayers, and application materials — a symbolic archive of her aspirations and determination.
Growing up in an environment where opportunities often felt limited, Cynthia said she held firmly to one belief: if excellence was possible for anyone, it could also be possible for her.
Her path, however, was far from effortless.
Behind the polished Oxford photographs and academic milestones were years of preparation, discipline, and persistence. Cynthia balanced rigorous academics with a multifaceted professional career spanning the aviation, oil and gas, renewable energy, and sustainability sectors. Her work included projects in petroleum engineering, carbon efficiency modelling, solar installation management, AI-powered educational technology, and sustainability advocacy.
She also led research focused on gas flaring in Nigeria and the decarbonisation of aviation through Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and hydrogen technologies — experiences that shaped her commitment to building sustainable systems for the future.
Reflecting on her Oxford matriculation ceremony at the historic Sheldonian Theatre, Cynthia described the experience as deeply emotional and affirming. Listening to Vice-Chancellor Irene Tracey welcome new students into the institution reminded her of the years of sacrifice, faith, and hard work that had brought her to that moment.
Today, Cynthia says Oxford has expanded her worldview intellectually, professionally, and personally. From engaging in discussions on climate finance, sustainability transitions, and energy policy to studying inside Oxford’s centuries-old Bodleian libraries, she describes the experience as transformative.
Yet beyond the prestige, she says the scholarships represent something even more significant: access.
For Cynthia, scholarships are not merely financial support; they are opportunities that bridge the gap between talent and possibility. She believes they are investments in potential and powerful tools capable of changing lives and communities.
That belief continues to shape her work beyond academia.
Through her non-profit initiative, Nigerian Girl In STEM, Cynthia has spent nearly a decade mentoring girls and advocating for increased access to STEM education, leadership development, and opportunities for underserved young women across Nigeria.
Her story has since become a source of inspiration for many young Nigerians who now see global academic opportunities as attainable realities rather than distant dreams.
As she continues her research in energy decarbonisation, climate innovation, sustainable finance, and policy at Oxford, Cynthia remains committed to using her platform to drive meaningful social impact while encouraging young Africans to pursue ambitious goals without fear.
Her message is simple but powerful: someone has to win the scholarship, someone has to sit at those tables, and someone has to make history — so why not you?
