Hope Waddell Legacy Foundation Moves to Save Teaching Jobs with Salary Top-Up

The Hope Waddell Legacy Foundation (HWLF) has commenced a monthly salary augmentation scheme for teachers at the historic Hope Waddell Training Institution, in a bid to curb staff attrition and sustain academic standards.

In a statement signed by its Executive Secretary, Emmanuel Ewa, the foundation said the initiative was introduced to stabilise the workforce following a wave of resignations linked to low remuneration.

According to Ewa, the salary support is being implemented under a pay structure approved by the foundation and endorsed by the National Executive Council of the Hope Waddell Old Students’ Association. He disclosed that HWLF is currently funding 50 per cent of the proposed salary increase for affected staff.

The first phase of the intervention, launched in January 2026, saw a total of ₦920,000 disbursed to 49 full-time teachers and one part-time staff member. The payments, he noted, will continue pending a comprehensive salary review by the Presbyterian Church Education Authority, which oversees the institution.

Ewa further revealed that the programme is financed through the foundation’s investment income and donor contributions. To date, the foundation has raised over ₦174 million from alumni, class sets, individual donors, and government support.

Out of this amount, ₦160 million has been invested in treasury instruments, yielding returns exceeding ₦227 million, thereby strengthening the sustainability of the intervention.

To ensure transparency, the foundation stated that all funds are managed through joint accounts domiciled with First Bank of Nigeria and administered by the board’s chairman, secretary, and treasurer.

Incorporated on January 21, 2025, and officially launched in March 2025, the foundation’s broader mandate includes infrastructure development, scholarship awards, staff and student support, and enhancing graduate outcomes.

The latest intervention underscores growing alumni and private sector involvement in preserving legacy institutions and improving education quality in Nigeria.
