Jigawa State Governor, Malam Umar Namadi, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the establishment of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), describing the initiative as timely, far-reaching and critical to easing the financial burden on students across the country.
The governor gave the commendation on Tuesday while receiving members of the National Executive Council of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), led by its National President, Comrade Olusola Ladoja, during a courtesy visit to the Government House in Dutse. The delegation was in Jigawa for the NANS Northwest zonal elections covering Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Jigawa, Sokoto and Kebbi states.
Governor Namadi thanked the association for selecting Jigawa State as host and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting NANS activities and other student-focused engagements. He said the student loan scheme reflects President Tinubu’s resolve to prioritise education and youth welfare at a time when rising tuition fees have made access to higher education increasingly challenging for many families.
Recalling the impact of fee increases on students, the governor disclosed that the Jigawa State Government had invested heavily in supporting indigent students as part of its human capital development drive. According to him, the state, through the Students’ Affairs Office, expended nearly ₦700 million on school fees assistance to prevent students from dropping out.
“I remember when school fees were increased and many students could not cope. Some would have dropped out, which is unacceptable. Jigawa State had to intervene and pay close to seven hundred million naira to support our students,” Namadi said, adding that the NELFUND initiative further demonstrates the President’s concern for the future of Nigerian youth.
The governor also commended NANS leadership for promoting unity, dialogue and constructive engagement among students, urging them to uphold accountability, transparency and responsible leadership. He stressed that disagreements should be resolved through dialogue rather than confrontation, noting that such values are essential for grooming future national leaders.
In his remarks, the NANS National President, Comrade Olusola Ladoja, praised both the federal and Jigawa State governments for what he described as student-friendly policies. He hailed the student loan scheme as a groundbreaking intervention that signals a new era of responsive governance in Nigeria’s education sector.
Ladoja described the programme as unprecedented in the country’s democratic history, noting that President Tinubu is the first Nigerian leader to institutionalise access to education through a structured student loan framework. He also thanked the Jigawa State Government for providing a peaceful and enabling environment for the successful conduct of the NANS Northwest zonal elections.
The NANS leadership reaffirmed its commitment to sustained collaboration with the Jigawa State Government in advancing student welfare and educational development across the region.
