FUTES Senate Approves Five-Year Degree Structure, Sets 2026 Matriculation Date

The Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences (FUTES), Iyin-Ekiti, has taken a major stride in shaping its academic framework as the University Senate approved a five-year duration for all undergraduate programmes, in line with national regulatory benchmarks and the institution’s technological mandate.

The decision was reached at a Senate meeting chaired by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gbenga Aribisala, who described the development as a defining milestone for a university established less than a year ago but already running full academic operations.

“This is a historic moment in the life of FUTES. Though young, the university has commenced serious academic activities, and this resolution gives us a clear academic compass and institutional stability for global competitiveness,” Aribisala said.

The Senate also ratified the 2025/2026 academic calendar, outlining key activities for the session. According to the approved schedule, first-semester examinations will hold in April 2026, while the maiden matriculation ceremony has been fixed for February 27, 2026.

Professor Aribisala noted that the university’s foundation rests on quality teaching, impactful research and responsive community service, stressing that FUTES is being built on legacy rather than personal ambition. “What we are building here must endure and serve generations,” he added.

In further resolutions, the Senate granted concurrence to the introduction of a pre-degree programme, directing management to ensure strict adherence to academic standards and quality delivery. Membership of strategic committees, including quality assurance, university ranking and research development, was also approved.

The Vice-Chancellor disclosed that management is intensifying efforts to provide a conducive learning environment, with plans underway to register students under the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) scheme. He added that infrastructure expansion remains a priority, with proposals to connect the institution to the national grid while complementing power supply with solar energy solutions.

Placing students at the centre of its growth agenda, Aribisala said FUTES is committed to mentorship, character formation and leadership grooming, with emphasis on discipline, punctuality and academic integrity as pillars for sustainable excellence.

Members of the Senate commended the Vice-Chancellor for his visionary leadership, noting that his experience has accelerated the university’s take-off and positioned FUTES on the path toward national impact and global relevance.
