FUT Daura: Owokoniran Demands Quality, Compliance in Construction Projects

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Transportation, Daura, Wahab Akanni Owokoniran, has inspected ongoing construction and renovation projects at the institution, directing contractors to adhere strictly to approved specifications and quality standards.

Owokoniran carried out the inspection on Monday, August 24, 2026, as part of efforts by the Governing Council to monitor the progress of projects secured for the university and ensure that they are executed according to contractual requirements.

Before visiting the project sites, the council chairman held a meeting with the university management, where he stressed the importance of regular engagement with the institution's leadership to obtain first-hand information about its infrastructure and other pressing needs.

“Before embarking on the inspection, I decided to first interact with the University Management, and this interaction is the second we are having in 2026,” Owokoniran said.

He assured the management that he would continue to engage with the university periodically to better understand its needs and support its development.

“I want to assure you that I will, from time to time, be interacting with you with the aim of getting first-hand information on the needs of the University,” he added.

Owokoniran said the projects being executed were designed to address the critical infrastructure needs of the relatively young institution and provide facilities capable of serving generations of students and staff.

Among the projects he listed were the Senate Building, Centre for Railway Signal and Communication, student hostel accommodation, and the renovation of the Great Green Wall building, which is being renamed the Centre of Transpo-Entrepreneurship.

Other projects include workshops, a School of General Studies, classroom blocks and faculty buildings.

The council chairman said the inspection was not limited to determining the level of completion of the projects but was also aimed at ensuring that contractors complied with the terms and conditions attached to the contracts.

“This inspection is to see for ourselves the development made so far in the execution of these projects, as well as ensure quality, especially as the University is one of the newly established universities with critical needs for utilisation by many generations to come,” he said.

The inspection also enabled the Governing Council leadership to interact directly with contractors and consultants handling the various projects.

At the project sites, the Director of Physical Planning and Municipal Services, Architect Usman Mukhtar Wali, briefed the council chairman and university management on the progress and stages of execution of the projects.

Following the briefings, Owokoniran identified areas requiring attention and directed that necessary improvements be made to ensure compliance with expected standards.

He also called on the university management to maintain teamwork in advancing the institution's development, while encouraging officials to approach him directly on matters requiring the intervention of the Governing Council.

“I urge you to continue to support the Governing Council in performing its mandates, and I want you to feel free with me in doing so,” Owokoniran said.

Receiving the council chairman, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Umar Adam Katsayal, described the visit as evidence of Owokoniran's commitment to the growth and development of the institution.

“This, no doubt, showed the importance the Chairman attached to the University and its development,” Katsayal said.

The Vice-Chancellor noted that the engagement marked the second meeting between the Pro-Chancellor and the university management in 2026, expressing optimism that such interactions would continue.

“This is the second meeting that the Pro-Chancellor is having with University Management within this year. It is our hope that the same tempo will be sustained by Hon. Owokoniran,” he said.

The inspection covered projects aimed at expanding the university's academic, residential and specialised transportation-related infrastructure.

The Governing Council is expected to continue monitoring the projects to ensure their timely completion and compliance with approved specifications and quality standards.
