The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has issued a firm warning to the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Ekiti State Chapter, cautioning the group against proceeding with its planned protest at the university’s main campus.
In a statement jointly signed by SUG President, James Adio; General Secretary, Ayorinde Alao; and Public Relations Officer, David Abiola, the union described the proposed demonstration as “unauthorized, unnecessary, and potentially disruptive.”
The statement, titled “Letter of Resistance and Warning Against National Youth Council of Nigeria Protest Within FUOYE,” stressed that the university is an academic environment dedicated to learning and research — not a stage for political activism or external agitation.
“The university community is not a ground for political mobilisation or external agitation,” the SUG declared. “No external body or association is permitted to conduct protests or gatherings within the institution without the explicit approval of the Students’ Union Government.”
The union emphasized that the peace and stability currently prevailing on campus must not be compromised, warning that any attempt to turn FUOYE into what it called a “theatre of protests and gatherings” would be strongly resisted.
Reiterating its commitment to maintaining order, the SUG vowed to collaborate with university management and relevant security agencies to protect lives and property within the institution. It also threatened to take disciplinary and legal actions against anyone or group attempting to disrupt the campus environment.
“Your proposed activity is unauthorised, unnecessary, and capable of disrupting the peace, order, and stability currently enjoyed within our campus community,” the statement read. “This, therefore, serves as both a resistance and an official warning.”
The SUG urged the NYCN to immediately suspend its planned protest and adopt lawful, constructive means of engagement if it wishes to address concerns relating to the university. Any defiance, it warned, would be viewed as a deliberate act of provocation and trespass.
The student leadership also reaffirmed that only the university management, in partnership with the Students’ Union, reserves the authority to approve any form of public demonstration within campus grounds. Allowing external bodies to mobilize students, it argued, could undermine the university’s autonomy and expose its community to unnecessary unrest.
Meanwhile, the NYCN Ekiti Chapter, led by Chairman Segun Bankole and General Secretary Silas Olawale, had earlier announced plans to stage a mass protest at the FUOYE main campus on Monday, November 3, 2025.
The youth council said the demonstration was intended to draw attention to alleged cases of abuse of office by the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abayomi Fasina. The NYCN also claimed it had exhausted all official channels before resorting to a peaceful protest, adding that it planned to temporarily relocate its secretariat to the university campus for the duration of the demonstration.
“We will remain there in peaceful mass protest until our demands are met,” the group declared.
As tensions rise, observers are urging dialogue and restraint, warning that any escalation could disrupt the peace FUOYE has enjoyed in recent years. The situation now hangs in the balance, with both student leaders and the youth council under pressure to avoid confrontation and protect the integrity of the academic community.
