The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), has announced plans to establish a Chinese Language School that will serve as a centre for language learning and cultural exchange in Ogun State and across Nigeria.
Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, disclosed this on Monday during the visit of the Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos, Ms. Yan Yuqing, to the institution’s Alabata campus.
According to Kehinde, the proposed school will deepen FUNAAB’s long-standing partnership with China in agriculture, trade, culture, and education. *“To further consolidate on the mutual relationship with the Republic of China, the university also aspires to establish a Chinese Language School to serve as a hub for language and cultural exchange for Ogun State and beyond,”* he said.
The Vice-Chancellor praised China’s innovation, development strides, and hospitality, reaffirming FUNAAB’s readiness to explore new avenues of collaboration that would enhance academic excellence, cultural understanding, and socio-economic growth.
In her remarks, Consul General Yan Yuqing commended the university’s serene environment, vast land resources, and agricultural potential. She pledged to foster stronger linkages between FUNAAB and agricultural institutions in China, facilitate research collaborations, and support academic exchanges, including seminars in Beijing and other cities.
Yuqing also reaffirmed commitment to the Chinese Training Centre at FUNAAB, which promotes Chinese language, culture, and traditional medicine, while announcing plans to extend a charity programme to support underprivileged students and staff in Ogun State.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Olukayode Akinyemi, described Yuqing as a woman of integrity, recalling how she delivered on four promises within a month. He highlighted potential collaboration areas including renewable energy, joint degree programmes, engineering, medicine, and student exchanges.
Also speaking, Mr. Li Zhensheng of the China-Africa Economic and Trade Promotion Council outlined six priority areas of cooperation with FUNAAB—food security, manufacturing, mineral resources development, oil and gas refining, trade services, and education. He further suggested collaboration in mushroom cultivation, medicinal research, and linking the university’s clinic with Chinese medical experts.
The visit ended with a tour of key facilities, including FUNAAB’s 3MW Hybrid Solar Station, Greenhouse, and Central Laboratories at the Centre of Excellence in Agricultural Development and Sustainable Environment.
Dignitaries present included Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development), Prof. Olawale Dairo; Registrar, Dr. Titus Adeniyi; Bursar, Mr. Olukayode Osinuga; China-FUNAAB Desk Officer, Prof. Lawrence Egbeyale; and Germany-FUNAAB Desk Officer, Prof. Olufemi Ojo. The Consul General was accompanied by Mr. Xu Fan, Director of Bilateral Relations; Protocol Officer, Mr. Haa Yihe; and Miss Su Ying.
